TIP #26
THE BOLLYWOOD WORKOUT
Bored with your workout? Want to play a little, shake a little, dance a little... getting a great cardio workout and becoming stronger and more fit with each move... all while listening to some fun, energizing music? Then you might want to check out Hemalayaa's sexy dance workout, set to Bollywood-style tunes that will get you up, shimmying and shoulder shaking in a hurry!

The clip above will give you an idea of what it's all about -- and no doubt it'll get your toes tapping; you might just forget you're burning calories!

TIP #25
CAN SEX CURE WRINKLES?
Now here's some news that's worth reading!

Over 10 years' time, a study of more than 3,500 European and American women and men was conducted to research the factors involved in maintaining a youthful appearance. The individuals who consistently appeared to be approximately 7 to 12 years younger than their actual (chronological) age reported that they had a very active sex life! How active is active? Three or more times a week.

TIP #24
GO NUTS!
Want a tasty, crunchy, satisfying treat with anti aging benefits, offering goodies like vitamin E, magnesium, protein, potassium and fiber? Nuts are a great choice for an afternoon or anytime snack!

For example, pistachios weigh in at 158 calories per ounce (and an ounce is 49 nuts!) and are high in cholesterol-lowering plant sterols and potassium.

Yes, nuts are also high in fat, but it's the good fats we're talking about here... anti-inflammatory fats *and* anti-inflammatory antioxidants -- both of which may help to control weight.

Reach for: almonds, pistachios, walnuts, hazelnuts (also called filberts), and Brazil nuts.

TIP #23
THE SWEET BENEFIT OF SOUR CHERRIES
Belly fat. It happens. Despite our best efforts, belly fat can sneak up on us and one day...we're looking down on a not-so-pleasingly plump midsection -- and wondering where to start on getting rid of it!

Well here's some good news -- sour cherries can help. Scientists posit that it's the anthocyanins, the the antioxidants that give fruits like cherries and blueberries their dark color, that may be responsible for helping whittle our middles. University of Michigan researchers fed tart cherry powder to rats as a tiny portion of their diet and the animals lost 17 percent of their belly fat in just three months.

Try adding a 1/4 cup of sour cherries to your morning smoothie or oatmeal and see if you notice the benefits!

TIP #22
WHAT'S FOR BREAKFAST?
For a hearty and satisfying breakfast, try traditional, thick cuts oats -- they take just 10 minutes to prepare! (Tip: Make a double batch and reheat the second serving the following morning. Easy!)

Oats are high in fiber, protect against cardiovascular disease and also help stabilize blood sugar.

Forgo the usual cream and brown sugar and try a 1/4 cup of blueberries and a dash of cinnamon on top, or, for a savory breakfast, top oats with a poached, scrambled, or over-easy egg.

TIP #21
CLOSE YOUR EYES AND... MEDITATE!
Want to lower your stress levels (remember, stress ages you!), attain a deep level of relaxation, elevate your mood, and enhance immune system function? Meditation can help you accomplish all this and *much* more. Although we often think of meditation as a spiritual practice, meditating also offers a wide variety of health benefits.

Don't have an hour a day to devote to quieting your mind? Start with just 5 minutes! Find a comfortable, quiet place where you won't be disturbed. Sit with your back straight and your hands in a comfortable position, relax your eyes (closing them is fine, too) and focus on your breathing. Don't worry about doing it right, just relax and breathe... for 5 minutes.

There, you've meditated! Try it once a day for just 5 minutes and see if you notice a difference.

TIP #20
THIS SPICE IS PURE ANTI AGING GOLD!

Have you had your turmeric lately? This brilliant gold spice gives Indian curries their rich, vibrant hue... and it's chock full of powerful anti inflammatory, anti aging antioxidants (that's a lot of anti's!).

Turmeric boasts a host of benefits, including blasting free radicals and protecting against Alzheimer's... as well as many others. Read more about turmeric benefits here!

TIP #19
FLAX SEED OIL BENEFITS
Coldwater fish contain the highest levels of Omega 3 Fatty Acids... but did you know that flaxseed oil is also an excellent source of Omega 3s as well as Omega 6s? These two essential fatty acids are important for immune system development, digestive support, healthy brain function, and circulatory health, and offer anti-aging benefits like softer, smoother skin.

So if you don't like fish, if you're a vegetarian, or if you just want to get more healthy, anti aging EFAs into your diet on a regular basis, why not try flax oil?

Fresh flax oil has a wonderful, light, nutty flavor and can be drizzled over salads, grains or cooked vegetables, added to smoothies and simply taken by the spoonful. You should purchase flax oil from the refrigerator case at your local grocery or health food store -- I like Flora brand flax oil -- and store it in the fridge after opening. It will stay fresh for approximately six months.

TIP #18
HOW MUCH WATER *IS* THAT?
Looking for the fountain of youth? Well, start by drinking your water! Drink at least 8 eight ounce glasses of good, filtered water each day -- staying hydrated is an important part of your anti aging regimen.

If you're like me, though, it's tough to remember how much you've consumed! I have great intentions, but hmm, was that glass number 4 or number 7? How to keep track?

Kleen Kanteen makes a great 64 ounce widemouth stainless steel (better, we think, than plastic, even BPA-free pastic) canteen. It stores your recommended daily 'dosage' and is easy to clean, too!

TIP #17
HOW COFFEE AGES YOU
Sad news for coffee drinkers, myself included. That morning cup of java raises levels of cortisol and insulin, and these hormones pack a double whammy -- they accelerate the aging process and encourage the storage of fat in the body.

What to do? Try switching to green tea, a mood-improver that contains antioxidants that *slow down* the aging process as well as boost metabolism.

Not quite ready to give up that latte? I hear you! Here's what I do... Cut back to 2 days a week. I choose to have my coffee on Saturday and Sunday mornings, when I can really sit back, relax and enjoy it. (I've also switched to decaf because the caffeine was making me anxious.) Now coffee is a *treat* rather than a habit.

Try green tea for the other mornings (or whenever you like to drink it). In addition to regular green tea, I also like Genmaicha, which is green tea with a bit of roasted rice. It has a toasty, comforting taste that, IMHO, is delicious.

You can also experiment with coffee substitutes. I like Celestial Seasonings Roastaroma herbal tea, made from roasted barley, chicory and carob with spices. It's 100% caffeine free and has no added artificial flavorings or sugar.

And about that sugar... leave it out, OK? As we saw in Anti Aging Tip #14, sugar ages you! Need a little sweetness without throwing a curve ball in your anti aging routine? Try a little xylitol, a low carb sweetener that fights cavities and is metabolized without insulin. It's super low on the glycemic index, coming in at just 7. I like XyloSweet. It tastes just like real sugar with a very, very slight 'cooling' sensation, unnoticeable in food or beverages.

TIP #16
BORED BY YOUR EXERCISE ROUTINE? TRY INTERVAL TRAINING!
We all know that exercise is integral to good health... and a must for anti aging... but let's be honest. Sometimes it can feel like a real drag.

If you need a little change of pace, why not check out interval training (also called cross training)? It's a FUN way to get your workout from ZZZZ to ZING! Read more about interval training exercise here.

TIP #15
72 HOURS TO A YOUNGER LOOKING YOU!
In our Anti Aging Tips, below, we've talked about the benefits of fish and also tipped you off to the Facelift in Your Fridge.

For more specifics on how to do your very own nutritional face lift in 72 hours, (it really works!) go to our new 3 Day Face Lift page for all the details!

TIP #14
SAY SAYONARA TO SUGAR!
We'll go into this in greater detail elsewhere, but suffice it to say -- SUGAR IS AGING YOU! It causes
inflammation, creates free radicals, causes the body to store fat due to increased insulin levels and...here's the visual you've been waiting for...causes browning, or 'protein glycation' in your tissues. Sounds awful, right?!

In the process of protein glycation, sugar molecules attach to collagen fibers, creating cross links -- this is akin to toughening of the skin and results in a loss of elasticity. Here's a quote from Dr. Perricone, M.D., that oughtta scare you straight: "When glycation occurs in the skin, the ultimate effect is not unlike tanning a hide. Over time, skin begins to resemble a cross between beef jerky and an old boot, unevenly discolored and heavily striated with deep lines and grooves." Ack!

And unfortunately, it's not just the white, granular stuff we're talking about here. It's also sweeteners like honey and molasses as well as foods that break down into sugar, such as pasta and breads, cereals, rice, potatoes and fruit juices.

Where to begin? For starters, no more white sugar and absolutely, never, ever any high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Cut these two out without a second thought! Take a look at our anti aging foods page and the anti inflammatory diet page for inspiration.

Once you begin adding more whole foods and protein to your diet, your sugar cravings, if you have them, will almost immediately lessen or disappear. See Anti Aging Tip #13: FOOD FIRST! for more ideas.

TIP #13
FOOD FIRST!
It's easy to get overwhelmed when researching anti aging tips... with so many products, doctors, supplements, exercises and ideas, it's sometimes difficult to know where to begin!

Setting aside expensive consultations where someone else actually does all the work of creating a plan *for* you... START WITH YOUR FOOD.

Anti aging foods give themselves away -- they're natural and naturally colorful and include significant amounts of health supporting antioxidants and phytonutrients. Think salmon, tomatoes, blueberries, deep green leafy veggies like broccoli, chard and collards, lemons, strawberries, etc.

See how many colors of the rainbow you can work into everyday meals!

TIP #12
SNACK ON BRAZIL NUTS FOR THE BENEFITS OF SELENIUM
Selenium, a trace element, acts in the body as an antioxidant, destroying free radicals, supporting the immune system and helping the body make more glutathione.

Selenium is also known as a mood booster because of its ability to assist with the production of essential fatty acids, which have a tremedous impact on mood and brain function in general.

TIP #11
LOOSEN UP!
Know what makes us feel older? Knotted muscles that can be caused by stress -- and perhaps too many hours sitting at the computer!

Neck, shoulders, hips, knees, upper and lower back.... Let's face it, it's no fun to deal with aches and pains.

We were recently introduced to Miracle Balls and the Miracle Ball Method by Elaine Petrone. Amy reports that they're amazing and I've just ordered a pair from Amazon.

TAKE 2 OF THESE AND CALL US IN THE MORNING

The idea is this: Using simple breathing techniques and your body weight to rest on two smallish, spongy, grapefruit-sized balls, you help release tension and loosen up sore muscles. Included in the package is an instruction book with exercises for all areas of the body.

With over 175 positive reviews on Amazon, we think this simple (and under $20.00, including shipping) stress buster is something to check out!

TIP #10
SKIN CARE INGREDIENT TO WATCH FOR: THE PERKS OF PYCNOGENOL...
An extract from the bark of the French maritime pine, pycnogenol helps fight free radicals and strengthens skin by expanding blood vessels. The result? Firmer, more hydrated skin and fewer lines and wrinkes! Look for it as an ingredient in topical skin care creams and serums like Dr. Perricone's paraben-free High Potency Eye Lift.

TIP #9
THERE'S NOTHING FISHY ABOUT IT...
Eating seafood (in moderate amounts, of course) supports good health!

Eat a variety of fish, high in Omega 3 fatty acids, at least twice a week. Good for your brain and heart, we have to get omegas from our diet since we can't make them ourselves.

Try to buy wild caught fish with a few exceptions: farmed oysters, mussels and trout can be good choices as well as deep sea farmed salmon from Scotland and deep sea farmed tuna from Hawaii.

Most farmed salmon is not good for you *or* the environment, and stay away from Atlantic salmon. Ask your fishmonger to make sure you are making a healthy, sustainable choice or look for the blue and white Marine Stewardship Council logo or recommendations from Ocean Conservancy.

Here are a few good choices...

  • Anchovies
  • Atlantic mackerel
  • Farmed rainbow trout
  • Farmed oysters
  • Alaskan or Canadian sablefish
  • Wild Alaskan salmon
  • Sardines

(If you don't like fish or are a vegetarian or vegan, there are some plant sources that contain a precursor to Omega-3 fatty acids, called alpha-linolenic acid or ALA. Try flax seeds, flax oil and walnuts.)

TIP #8
SOAK UP SOME SUN...AND SOME VITAMINS!
We should all wear sunscreen to protect our skin, right? Yes, protecting skin from the damaging (and aging) rays of the sun is important...but believe it or not, sometimes we need to break that rule!

It's good for us to get some unprotected time in the sun! Ideally, 15 minutes of sun a day on exposed skin will ensure a healthy dose of Vitamin D. (Do steer clear of direct rays on sunscreen-free skin during the hottest midday hours and aim for morning or late afternoon sunshine.)

Studies show that most of us are deficient in this important vitamin. If you don't get much sun, especially during the winter months, you might consider taking 1000 IU of Vitamin D as a supplement. Look for a combo of Calcium, Magnesium and Vitamin D -- this combination will help protect your heart and bones and improve your sleep with just a single pill.

TIP #7
FEEL YOUNGER...AND GET STRONGER...BY ACTING LIKE A KID!
Let's face it -- sometimes exercise can seem a bit routine and uninspired! Here's an anti aging tip on the lighter side...

Want something to pique your interest, challenge and build new muscles, burn fat and make you smile, too?

Enter the hula hoop!

Hooping tones your core, gives you a fantastic cardio workout and burns 400 to 600 calories an hour to boot! You'll need a hoop sized for adults (find them online) and if you're really ready to go for it, and instructional DVD to show you a few fun moves. Companies like Hoopnotica offer package deals so you'll be up and hooping in no time.

Want to see what it's all about? Check out the video below! (and no, it's really not as hard as it looks!)

TIP #6
EAT AVOCADOS TO GET MORE GLUTATHIONE
You know about the master antioxidant glutathione, right? If not, here's your opportunity to learn!

We think this anti aging tip is so important we'll be devoting an entire page to glutathione benefits.

Why? Because low glutathione levels indicate you are significantly more susceptible to being hospitalized with a chronic disease.

When glutathione levels drop (and they do with age, falling 17% between the ages of 40 and 60), free radical activity increases... putting stress on the immune system.

The good news? You can get more glutathione by increasing your consumption of raw fruits and vegetables -- and avocados are tops, containing three times as much glutathione as other common sources like apples, cantaloupes, cherries and plums and five times as much as carrots and spinach.

TIP #5
WALK YOURSELF YOUNGER?
By now you're sure to have heard of FitFlops....their slogan is "Get a Workout While You Walk". Great! Why *not* slide into a pair for errands like grocery shopping, casual outings, walking the dog, etc.?

Their flipflops are engineered to tighten and tone leg muscles and glutes while you walk while improving posture and giving relief from plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, chronic back pain, sciatica, osteoarthritis, RLS (restless leg syndrome), scoliosis and degenerative disc disease.

Summer's ending, true, but warm and cozy styles have just been released for fall and winter. We're curious... and have just placed an order for the Gogh II clog in charcoal gray. We'll soon be reporting back to let you know how we like them and if indeed we're feel great and firming up by wearing FitFlops!

TIP #4
WHAT A SWEET FACE YOU HAVE!
Dreaming of an anti aging spa facial but don't quite have the cash to plunk down for it? We understand! Try this thrifty, fun (and sticky!) idea from our stash of super anti aging tips:

Slather a teaspoon of raw organic honey on your face (we like Y.S. Organic Bee Farms brand) and relax for 10 minutes. Rinse gently with warm water and a soft washcloth, pat dry and.... enjoy your silky, smooth skin and rosy glow!

What happened? Honey contains natural antioxidants and acids that help to gently exfoliate and rejuvenate your skin. Honey also attracts and retains water, so it plumps skin and helps diminish fine lines and wrinkles. It's a wonderfully soothing cleanser or masque and an inexpensive treat to indulge in!

(Note: It's *always* a good idea to do a small spot test on your skin to make sure you are not sensitive to ingredients. If you have an allergy to honey or any sort of pollen, you'll want to skip this anti aging tip.)

TIP #3
BLUEBERRIES ARE SUPER...AS IN SUPERFOODS!
Want to kick up your daily dose of antioxidants? Then add blueberries to your day! Throw a handful in your morning smoothie and make some extra to freeze in a to-go container for a lunchtime treat that keeps your lunchbox cool.

TIP #2
THE 3-DAY FACELIFT IN YOUR FRIDGE
What?! Anti aging tips that taste good? Well, we can't take credit for that snappy headline but we sure do love the idea that by following a food-based, anti-inflammatory diet chock full of essential fatty acids and antioxidants -- foods like salmon, oatmeal, antioxidant vegetables and healthy, hydrating fruits, as well as nuts and green tea -- we'll experience wonderful changes in how we look and feel, in just 72 hours! Fantastic!

Thank Dr. Perricone for this tip and check out his 3-DAY FACELIFT IN YOUR FRIDGE here! (We'll be posting more anti aging tips from Dr. Perricone... we like him!)

TIP #1
CHOOSE FRUIT FOR BREAKFAST
Why? A fruit breakfast is a simple, healthy way to start the day. High in water, fiber, enzymes and antioxidants, raw fruit jump-starts the detoxification process by helping to sweep the intestinal walls clean and gives you energy to start your day. (Please, if you can, select organic fruits or wash them well to remove any pesticide residues.)

If a light fruit breakfast doesn't work well for your constitution, here are 2 things that have worked for me to help 'slow the fruit sugars down'. Alone or in combination, this can help the fruit sugar not hit your bloodstream in such a hurry!

  • Add a tablespoon or two of flax oil and/or flax seeds
  • Add a tablespoon or two of powdered greens
You can follow up your fresh fruit breakfast with a protein drink or smoothie in 2 hours; eating sooner can cause the fruit to ferment in your stomach which can cause cramping and gas.

Helene Silver's wonderful book Rejuvenate: A 21-Day Natural Detox Plan for Optimal Health has simple and easy suggestions for great fruit breakfasts (and tons of other great anti aging tips), including her:

  • Fresh Apple Breakfast
  • Sliced Pineapple Breakfast
  • Papaya Complexion Breakfast
  • Berry Breakfast
  • Fresh Cantaloupe Breakfast (eat melons alone and not in combination with other fruit!)
  • Cleansing Watermelon Breakfast
  • Healing Grape Breakfast
